Major U.S. stock indexes traded lower in midday sessions on Tuesday, driven by a decline in semiconductor shares and mixed results from major banks. The S&P 500 fell 0.25% to 7,788, while the Nasdaq Composite dropped 0.37% to 27,139. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lagged further, trading 0.18% lower at 51,758.

The selling pressure in the technology sector was most acute in semiconductors, where the PHLX Semiconductor Index declined 1.50% during the morning session. This drop occurred as investors assessed the impact of Chinese memory chip innovations and intensifying global competition. Despite the intraday losses, the index has accumulated a 68.20% gain year to date.

Financial institutions began the quarterly earnings cycle with divergent market reactions. Goldman Sachs shares rose after the bank exceeded analyst estimates, while Wells Fargo stock declined following a miss in revenue expectations. The broader takeaway from the financial results suggests that consumers and businesses remain relatively resilient, though rising profits do not paint a complete picture of economic conditions.

Jamie Dimon, CEO of JPMorgan Chase, highlighted underlying risks during the earnings release, warning that potential interest rate hikes could negatively affect borrowers. These comments added to the caution surrounding the sector's performance.

In other notable movers, UnitedHealth Group initially climbed after raising its profit forecast but subsequently traded slightly lower. Johnson & Johnson shares fell approximately 6% after an adjusted earnings miss. Micron Technology slid more than 5%, joining other chipmakers in a broader sell-off.

Sector performance was mixed, with communication stocks leading gains while industrials and technology stocks faced selling pressure. In fixed income and commodities, the 10-Year Treasury yield fell 2 basis points to 5.22%. Gold prices dipped 0.15% to $4,165.28.
