President Donald Trump and his Republican allies are leveraging civil unrest in France to bolster their immigration messaging ahead of U.S. midterm elections. The administration is framing the European disturbances as evidence of the threats posed by immigration and what Trump describes as communists threatening American civilization.

During a rally in Kansas on Monday, Trump told the crowd that the burning of steeples and fires in France represented what he calls radical Democrats want to do to the United States. He asserted that France was being conquered, looted, and burned by migrants, jihadists, and communists who hate Christianity and Western civilization. Earlier in the day, speaking to reporters, the president claimed without evidence that the situation in France was about immigration rather than schools, a position he has repeatedly maintained. The White House directed inquiries to a Truth Social post by the president that echoed this rhetoric.

The unrest began as localized demonstrations by high school students in Paris last month over education grievances. According to Axios reporter Bec Falconer, these protests have broadened into a nationwide movement addressing poor school conditions and the cost of living. The situation has escalated into rioting and looting, resulting in thousands of arrests and clashes between police and protesters. French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the violence, attributing it to insurrectionist elements from radical far-left groups joined by numerous criminals. The interior ministry stated that 550,000 people demonstrated on Saturday, though Reuters reported a key union estimated the number at 800,000. The ministry also noted that approximately 500 police officers and firefighters were injured.

Other U.S. Republicans have joined in citing the protests to rally voters against immigration. Vice President JD Vance posted on X that Western liberals imported the third world into France in the name of diversity and compassion. He shared a video of a historic town hall reportedly set ablaze by masked protesters, per AFP, and contended that this represented the future congressional Democrats seek for the country.

Macron addressed the nation over the weekend, stating that the hundreds of thousands of demonstrators had legitimate demands that should not be conflated with violent rioters. He identified concerns including the cost of living and fuel price spikes triggered by the war in Iran. The forceful police response to student demonstrators has also drawn scrutiny, sparking dozens of probes into officer conduct.

The escalating turmoil has generated international alarm that the president is exploiting to frame his challenging path to victory in upcoming congressional races.
