Former first daughter Barbara Bush contributed $2,500 to the Lone Star Rising PAC, a political action committee that funds the Senate campaign of Texas Democrat James Talarico. Fox News Digital confirmed the transaction through Federal Election Commission filings, which show the donation occurred this quarter. The contribution provides a notable boost to Talarico’s effort to challenge incumbent Republican Sen. John Cornyn in the U.S. Senate race.
The donation comes amid a strained relationship between former President George W. Bush and President Donald Trump, a tension that dates back to the 2016 presidential campaign when Trump mocked Bush’s mother and brother. Despite this political divide, Bush’s support for a Democratic candidate marks a significant cross-aisle move during a critical period for Republican hopes of retaining control of the Senate. Bush is the twin sister of NBC host Jenna Bush Hager and shares her name with her late grandmother, the former first lady.
According to Houston Public Media, the Lone Star Rising PAC accounts for almost all outside spending supporting Talarico. While the $2,500 sum is smaller than contributions from other prominent donors, such as $150,000 from Eagles musician Don Henley, the visibility of Bush’s gift is significant. Texas campaign finance expert Andrew Cates noted to Houston Public Media that Bush chose a vehicle that reports all financial activity rather than a 501(c)(4) organization, which would have allowed her contribution to remain anonymous. Cates emphasized that she gave to a PAC that discloses all money in and out.
Bush, 44, currently serves as vice president of social impact and inclusion at the National Basketball Association. Her FEC filing lists an address in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn. Through the George W. Bush Presidential Center, she works internationally with the NBA to support humanitarian efforts focused on social justice, health equity, and sustainability. She also co-founded the Global Health Corps, an organization aimed at empowering youth to address global health issues, and has co-authored several children’s books with her sister.
Talarico has previously criticized big money in politics, accusing Cornyn and Attorney General Ken Paxton of wanting corporations and billionaires to decide elections rather than Texans. However, the candidate has stated he will not unilaterally disarm on campaign spending while his opponents employ political action committees, according to the Texas Tribune. The George W. Bush Presidential Center did not respond to inquiries seeking comment from the former president or his daughter. Fox News Digital also contacted the Washington Speakers Bureau, which represents Bush, and Talarico’s campaign regarding the donation.
