Old Dominion Freight Line is implementing a 4.9% general rate increase on Oct. 5, a date one month earlier than the company's previous hike. The shift aligns with a broader trend among less-than-truckload carriers that are moving their pricing schedules ahead of the traditional annual cycle.

The 4.9% figure represents an expected average of adjustments to base rates across different lanes and weight classes. Greg Lawrence, vice president of pricing services at Old Dominion, stated in a news release that the company must continue investing in its service network and technology systems to meet customer expectations. Lawrence explained that the rate adjustment aims to counterbalance ongoing financial pressures stemming from real estate, equipment, technology, and labor compensation.

Other public carriers have similarly accelerated their pricing schedules. ArcBest implemented a 5.9% hike for LTL services at both of its business units on June 22, approximately six weeks ahead of the one-year anniversary of its previous increase. The company has followed an 11-month cadence in recent years. Saia implemented a 7.1% general rate increase on July 6, which was 120 basis points higher and three months earlier than last year's increase.

These rate adjustments are taking place against a backdrop of improved industrial conditions. The Institute for Supply Management's Manufacturing PMI has stayed in expansion territory for eight straight months, recording a reading of 54.6 in August. This level sits just 100 basis points below the four-year high set in July, with readings above 50 signaling expansion and those below indicating contraction.

The new orders subindex, which serves as an indicator of future activity, declined by three percentage points but maintained growth at 53.7. Carrier tonnage typically lags this index by three months.
