Medtronic revenue rose 13.7% in the fiscal first quarter of 2027, ending July 31, 2026, a sharp acceleration from the 8.4% growth reported in the same period a year earlier. The company’s net margin reached 15.1% in that quarter, up from 12.1% in the prior year, indicating that profitability improved alongside the top-line expansion.

This recent performance stands in contrast to the broader trend. Over the last three years, Medtronic’s average annual sales growth of 6.0% has closely tracked the S&P 500’s 5.9% average. While the current pace is faster, it represents a recent deviation from a multi-year pattern that has mirrored the broader market. Investors have noted that Medtronic shares returned only 1.9% over the past year, significantly trailing the S&P 500’s 17.3% gain during the same period.

The company is currently executing a strategic restructuring by splitting off its MiniMed Group. An exchange offer launched on September 14, 2026, allows shareholders to swap Medtronic shares for MiniMed shares, a process that is generally tax-free for U.S. federal income tax purposes. Medtronic aims to distribute at least 80.1% of MiniMed’s shares through this mechanism.

Valuation metrics suggest the market is pricing Medtronic as an average index constituent. The stock trades at 23.1 times earnings, nearly identical to the S&P 500’s multiple of 22.7. Net income over the last twelve months was approximately 12% higher than in the previous year.

Future growth opportunities depend on regulatory milestones that are not yet realized. On October 1, 2026, the American Medical Association approved new procedure codes for two Medtronic technologies: Altaviva for urge urinary incontinence and Symplicity Spyral for uncontrolled hypertension. The company views these as long-term growth drivers but notes that the codes will not take effect until January 2028.

The stock’s behavior during market stress has been inconsistent. In the 2023 bond yield shock, Medtronic shares fell 21.0%, more than double the S&P 500’s 9.5% decline. During the 2022 inflation shock, both Medtronic and the index dropped roughly 23% and 24%, respectively. However, during the 2025 tariff shock, Medtronic lost only 6.5%, outperforming the index’s 19.0% decline.

Recent price action reflects volatility within a wider range. The stock hit a high of $101.97 on November 25, 2025, before falling to a low of $72.50 on June 2, 2026, a decline of about 29%. As of October 14, 2026, shares closed at $94.23.

The next earnings report is expected on or around November 16, 2026. This update will be the first since the MiniMed exchange offer began. Analysts will watch whether revenue growth sustains the recent 13.7% pace or reverts to the slower 6.6% rate seen in fiscal Q2 2026.
