Against the backdrop of uneven commercial construction activity globally, the modular flooring sector produced one of its stronger quarterly prints of the cycle. Interface, Inc. (Nasdaq: TILE) posted net sales of $395.7 million for the second quarter ended July 5, 2026, a 5.4% gain over the same period a year earlier, and raised its full fiscal year outlook on the strength of that result and a healthy order backlog.
Margin anatomy: tariff refunds meet operational execution
The income statement expands the picture. Gross profit margin reached 45.0% of net sales, 560 basis points wider than a year ago. On an adjusted basis the gain was 524 basis points, split between $15.6 million of IEEPA tariff refunds contributing 393 basis points and 131 basis points of factory-level improvement at higher utilization. CFO Bruce Hausmann attributed earnings growth to volume gains and manufacturing efficiencies, with the tariff refund adding further lift to margin and the headline comparison. Operating income came to $74.9 million, up 43.9%, and diluted earnings per share reached $0.88, a 60% year-on-year gain.
That tariff refund number needs isolating. The underlying margin story, at 131 basis points of operational improvement, is real but far less dramatic, and the second half will test whether that run rate holds once the refund benefit drops out.
Sector read-through: Healthcare leads, EAAA accelerates
In end-market terms, Healthcare carried the quarter, with global billings up 19%. Education and Corporate Office each added 5%. CEO Laurel Hurd described growth as broad-based across all regions and product categories. That spread points to a demand environment where institutional and healthcare spending is holding against the softer speculative office picture sector-wide.
The Europe, Africa, Asia-Australia (EAAA) segment gives this report its sharpest international angle. Net sales in EAAA rose 8.8% to $148.0 million, or 4.5% on a currency-neutral basis, and operating income expanded to $13.9 million from $3.2 million a year earlier, a 334.6% jump. Currency-neutral orders in EAAA grew 6.4% across the quarter. The Americas (AMS) segment posted $247.7 million in sales, up 3.4%, with operating income of $61.0 million, a 24.9% gain.
Raised guidance and the macro caveat
Interface raised its full fiscal year 2026 revenue guidance to a range of $1.455 billion to $1.485 billion, from $1.450 billion to $1.480 billion previously. The more significant revision was to adjusted gross profit margin, lifted to 40.6% of net sales from a prior target band of 38.8% to 39.0%. For Q3, guidance calls for net sales of $370 million to $380 million and adjusted gross profit margin of 40.8%.
The balance sheet closed the period with net debt of $122.8 million and a net leverage ratio of 0.5 times last twelve months adjusted EBITDA of $250.5 million. Management cited a "dynamic and uncertain global macro environment" as the qualifier against the raised outlook. That hedge names a specific variable: the $15.6 million in IEEPA tariff refunds that added 393 basis points to Q2 adjusted gross margin will not repeat automatically.
