Grant Newsham, a senior fellow at the Center for Security Policy and a retired U.S. Marine colonel, placed the agreement in an unusually long historical frame. Speaking on Fox & Friends Weekend, Newsham compared it to Secretary of State Seward's acquisition of Alaska in 1867, saying the pact "locks up" key northeastern terrain and prevents Russia and China from gaining military or economic footholds there. "This is a big deal," he said. "This is right up there with Secretary of State Seward getting Alaska." Newsham added that China and Russia would likely voice opposition but that their practical options were limited.
The investment dimension
The provision limiting adversarial investment extends the agreement's reach beyond military access. Newsham argued the deal blocks China and Russia from economic entry to Greenland as well as from military positioning, and he pointed to China's rollback in Panama and the Trump administration's moves in Venezuela as evidence of a coordinated regional posture. "You can see that there's a plan here for defending our homeland," he said.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio called the deal historic in a post on X, writing that it "permanently guarantees U.S. security interests in the Arctic at zero cost to the U.S. taxpayer" and that Greenland "will forever be part of the strategic defense area of North America and exclude any adversary from it and the surrounding area." Secretary of War Pete Hegseth separately highlighted Trump's stated intention to immediately begin developing a large U.S. military presence in Greenland.
Denmark and Greenland have said the agreement preserves their sovereignty and territorial integrity.
