Twitch streamer Hasan Piker confirmed to comedian Ziwe that he has always wanted to be a champagne socialist during a satirical interview segment aired on Sunday. The exchange occurred on Ziwe's YouTube channel, a platform known for posing uncomfortable questions to celebrity guests, and centered on Piker's personal wealth and political rhetoric.
During the conversation, Ziwe referenced Piker's previous statement that he wanted "let the streets soak in red capitalist blood." She then asked him about his experience at the Oscar parties this year. Piker described the atmosphere as weird and terrifying, noting the presence of Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos. He added that Bezos was shorter than he expected and that his favorite part of the event was meeting an actor from the series "Heated Rivalry."
Piker's attendance at Vanity Fair's Oscar party was previously documented in an interview with the outlet. In that conversation, he explained his strategy for navigating the room, stating that he tried to evade Bezos's peripheral vision because Bezos owns Twitch, the platform where Piker earns his livelihood. Piker told Vanity Fair that he brings both positive publicity and controversy to Twitch, making it a policy for him to remain invisible to avoid being recognized by the company's owner.
The interview with Ziwe shifted focus to Piker's real estate holdings when she asked why his needs were more important than those of other Californians, given that he resides in a $2.7 million home. Piker confirmed the price of the property but clarified that he does not own it free and clear. He stated that he has a mortgage and denied rumors that he purchased the home with cash, asserting that he does not possess that level of liquid wealth.
Ziwe also challenged Piker on the perceived hypocrisy of criticizing Democratic politicians for enriching themselves while profiting from progressive politics. She asked about his profit projections for the upcoming midterms. Piker responded by describing his business structure as a cooperative corporation with equal say and equal pay. He noted that he no longer runs advertisements on his channels, a change from his previous contract with Amazon which he said helped him avoid bans. Piker acknowledged that maintaining ethical standards while operating on major corporate platforms is difficult but stated that he works with union-made, American garment manufacturers for his merchandise.
Christian Toto, editor of Hollywood In Toto, provided a critical assessment of the interaction in a statement to Fox News Digital. Toto argued that while Piker already possesses a large platform and promotes violence, Ziwe was justified in pressing him on his wealth hypocrisy. Toto described Piker's responses as weak when confronted with rhetorical challenges regarding his lifestyle.
Piker has recently increased his political visibility, appearing on the campaign trail with Democrats running in the November midterms. In a separate appearance with Axios, Piker compared the United States to al-Qaeda regarding its global impact. He stated that pound for pound in terms of death tolls, the U.S. has caused tremendous terror around the world.
