StockStory analysts recommend avoiding United Community Banks shares, citing weak fundamental performance despite a reasonable valuation. The firm argues that the stock's shakier fundamentals present too much downside risk compared to better opportunities elsewhere in the market.

United Community Banks currently trades at $33.39 per share, a price that reflects a 1.1x forward price-to-book ratio. Over the past six months, the stock has posted a small loss of 2.3%, significantly underperforming the S&P 500, which gained 12.8% during the same period. Analysts note that while the valuation is reasonable, the company's fundamentals do not pass their quality test.

The primary driver for the bearish view is the company's revenue and earnings trajectory. Over the last five years, United Community Banks achieved a compounded annual revenue growth rate of 9.1%, a figure StockStory describes as mediocre and below its standard for the banking sector. Despite this revenue expansion, earnings per share remained flat over the same five-year period. This divergence indicates that the company became less profitable on a per-share basis as it expanded, suggesting that incremental sales were not translating into proportional bottom-line growth.

Further complicating the investment case is the projected trend in tangible book value per share (TBVPS). Consensus estimates suggest that United Community Banks's TBVPS will shrink by 1.6% over the next 12 months to reach $22.86. Analysts explain that TBVPS typically increases when banks generate higher net interest margins and keep credit losses low, allowing them to compound shareholder value. A projected decline in this metric is viewed as a sour projection for long-term value creation.

The analysis highlights that while net interest income forms the foundation of bank earnings, fee-based services in banking, credit, wealth management, and trading provide additional income streams. However, United Community Banks's current performance suggests these streams are not driving sufficient profitability to offset other factors. Consequently, StockStory is passing on the stock for now.

Instead of United Community Banks, the analysts direct attention to stocks they describe as the Amazon and PayPal of Latin America. The firm maintains that there are better investments available that offer stronger fundamentals and growth potential than what United Community Banks currently provides.
