In 2024, Musk promised to distribute $1 million daily to a randomly selected registered voter in a swing state. This announcement triggered legal challenges and drew suits from two Arizona residents who alleged the lottery was a fraud. The plaintiffs claimed that when Musk announced the sweepstakes, he falsely represented that the prizes would be awarded randomly.

Separate legal action was taken by the Philadelphia District Attorney, who sued to stop the giveaway on the grounds that Musk was running an illegal lottery.
