The U.S. Department of Justice has received thousands of fraud tips within days of launching a new whistleblower incentive program, according to Assistant Attorney General Colin McDonald. McDonald, who leads the National Fraud Enforcement Division, disclosed the volume of reports on Saturday during an appearance on "My View with Lara Trump." He described the tip line as a novel approach to combating fraudsters who are constantly evolving their tactics, while the federal government previously relied on established methods.
President Donald Trump announced the Fraud Whistleblower Incentive Program on Tuesday. Under the initiative, qualifying tipsters are eligible for a 1% commission, subject to applicable laws and rules. McDonald highlighted that this program offers an upfront payment upon an arrest, distinguishing it from historical whistleblower programs that required recipients to wait until the conclusion of a case. However, a White House official clarified that submitting an allegation alone does not guarantee a reward. To qualify for a commission, the tip must result in a successful fraud conviction or a significant federal enforcement action.
The rollout of the whistleblower initiative coincides with broader administrative efforts to combat fraud in federal benefit programs. These efforts include a recent 50-day enforcement surge targeting the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). That operation uncovered approximately $40 million in alleged SNAP fraud involving more than 40 suspects. McDonald acknowledged the challenge of recovering stolen taxpayer money once it has been spent. In response, the Justice Department is assembling an asset recovery team of specialists dedicated to tracking fraud proceeds and pursuing the forfeiture of property purchased with stolen funds. McDonald stated that the department is bringing new tools to the fight against fraud to ensure it is equipped to confront evolving criminal methods.
