The crypto asset class is navigating a period of mixed sentiment where near-term price action is testing the durability of institutional adoption. Against this backdrop, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong has reiterated a specific long-term valuation for Bitcoin that demands a steep acceleration in growth rates. The forecast hinges on the asset outperforming its own historical averages significantly over the next four years.

Armstrong stated on CNBC's Squawk Box Asia that he views a $400,000 price point for Bitcoin by 2030 as a reasonable target. This figure represents the upper end of his revised range, which he first outlined in August 2026 after lowering his initial 2025 prediction of $1 million. The adjustment reflects a 60% reduction in his earlier estimate while keeping the same target year. For context, ARK Invest continues to forecast a much higher terminal value, placing Bitcoin between $950,000 and $1 million by the end of the decade.

The Math Behind the Forecast

Achieving Armstrong's goal requires Bitcoin to compound at a 51% annual rate from its projected end-2026 level of roughly $77,000. This pace is 17 percentage points higher than the asset's historical average growth rate of about 34% over the past nine years. At that historical pace, Bitcoin would land near $248,000 by 2030, a figure that still represents a tripling from current levels. The current trading price stands at $81,049.99, which is 29.8% lower than a year ago but 5.11% higher over the past week.

The path to $400,000 is not a straight line. It requires specific milestones, including reaching $116,270 by the end of 2027 and $175,568 by the end of 2028. Polymarket data shows a 64% probability that Bitcoin hits $85,000 by the end of 2026, a near-term checkpoint that will reveal if the required growth pace is already slipping. However, the market assigns only a 1% chance of the asset touching $200,000 before 2027.

Supply Dynamics and Cycle Position

The upcoming Bitcoin halving is anticipated around mid-April 2028 at block 1,050,000. This event will cut miner rewards in half, tightening the supply of new coins entering the market. Historical patterns suggest such supply shocks are often followed by price surges within 12 to 18 months, potentially pointing to a peak in 2029 or early 2030. Armstrong believes the current cycle has bottomed out, citing Bitcoin's recovery from a low of $57,717 on July 1, 2026, as evidence that the recent down period is over.

Despite the long-term optimism, the immediate outlook remains cautious. Bitcoin is currently 35.8% below its all-time high of $126,198, set on October 6, 2025. Polymarket traders also see a 46% probability that the price dips below $70,000 before 2027. The critical level to watch before year-end is $126,198, as the upward path to Armstrong's target cannot fully materialize until that old high is reclaimed.
