World Labs was founded in 2024 by computer vision scientist Fei-Fei Li, along with researchers Justin Johnson, Christoph Lassner, and Ben Mildenhall. The company raised $230 million in funding, a portion of which came from AMD. The startup focuses on developing new world models, which are AI systems designed to provide a useful, predictive simulation of the physical world.

The acquisition positions AMD to compete in the world models space, a field where various architectures exist. Many current approaches involve training models on vast amounts of video data, according to an interview Ars conducted earlier this year with World Labs co-founder Ben Mildenhall and other experts in the field.
