The digital asset sector is seeing renewed institutional interest, with capital flows shifting toward privacy-focused protocols amid a broader risk-on environment. Zcash, the cryptocurrency with ticker ZEC, has been at the center of this move, gaining approximately 72% in a single month and more than tripling in value since July 1, 2026.
Institutional positioning and market context
The surge in Zcash's price preceded the most recent headline catalyst. By September 16, 2026, when Paradigm co-founder Matt Huang disclosed on X that the firm holds ZEC, the coin had already risen 221% from its July 1 close of $417 to $1,337. This timeline suggests that roughly 83% of the total dollar increase since July occurred before Paradigm entered the conversation. Paradigm stated it supports the Zcash Open Development Lab, which developed Zodl, Zcash's primary wallet. The lab secured a $25 million seed investment from Paradigm earlier this year, alongside Andreessen Horowitz, Coinbase Ventures, and Winklevoss Capital. Paradigm has not disclosed the specific amount of ZEC it holds.
Corporate accumulation and ETF filings
Cypherpunk Technologies, a publicly listed entity, is targeting a 5% stake in the total ZEC supply. As of December 30, 2025, the company held 290,063 ZEC at an average cost of $334, representing approximately 1.7% of the 16.87 million coins in circulation. To reach its 5% target, Cypherpunk aims to acquire an additional 553,000 coins. At the current price of $1,520, this translates to roughly $840 million in additional buying interest.
Grayscale has also filed with the SEC on August 21 to transform its Zcash Trust, ticker ZCSH, into a listed ETF on NYSE Arca. If approved, this would allow investors to purchase Zcash exposure through regular brokerage accounts, potentially increasing mainstream demand. Zcash's market value stands at approximately $25.6 billion, a figure that sits only a few percent below its record high. This recent milestone, reached on September 18, contrasts with the coin's all-time high of $5,942 recorded in October 2016, which occurred shortly after launch when a smaller fraction of the supply existed.
Supply dynamics and price levels
Zcash is capped at 21 million coins, similar to Bitcoin, with around 80% of the total supply already in circulation. This limited issuance suggests minimal selling pressure ahead. The asset is currently trading at $1,520, just 4% below its recent peak of $1,585 reached on September 18. Proponents point to the gap between the current price and the 2016 peak as potential room for growth, though that earlier high was driven by a much smaller circulating supply.
On balance, the market is pricing in the potential for continued institutional inflows. If Zcash closes above the September 18 peak of $1,585, it may attract further buyers. Conversely, a fall below the $847 closing price from August could trigger a significant pullback. The outcome will depend on whether the Grayscale ETF receives regulatory approval and if Cypherpunk executes its acquisition plan as stated.
