U.S. stock futures climbed in the overnight session late Monday, driven by a positive reaction to Anthropic's filing for an initial public offering on the Nasdaq. As of 10:22 p.m. EDT, Dow futures gained 0.18%, S&P 500 futures rose 0.14%, and Nasdaq-100 futures increased by 0.16%. This follows Monday's closing session where the Nasdaq Composite led a broad market rally, adding more than 200 points to finish 0.82% higher, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 gained 0.28% and 0.70%, respectively.
The surge in artificial intelligence and technology shares was attributed to the Anthropic filing, which lifted sentiment across the sector ahead of a busy week for corporate earnings. Semiconductor-related exchange-traded funds posted significant gains on Monday, with the iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) closing up nearly 3%. The Direxion Daily Semiconductor Bull 3X Shares (SOXL) and VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH) recorded increases of more than 8% and 2.7%, respectively. JP Powers, chief investment officer at RWA Wealth Partners in Boston, told Reuters that the market has shifted to an optimistic tilt due to the release, though he noted it will be interesting to see how the stock performs once it lists.
Investors are also preparing for earnings reports from major technology companies including Alphabet Inc., Microsoft Corporation, and Amazon.com Inc., alongside other prominent names such as Visa Inc., Boeing Co., Coca-Cola Co., SoFi Technologies, and Robinhood Markets. Powers cautioned that the market could experience volatility if these releases do not move in the same direction as the current optimism.
Macro factors also played a role in the trading environment. The Federal Reserve’s policy meeting was set to begin on Tuesday, with investors largely expecting the central bank to hold rates steady ahead of midterm elections, despite market pricing for a potential December hike amid rising inflation. Richard Clarida, PIMCO global economic advisor and former Federal Reserve vice chair, told CNBC that the Fed is expected to hold rates in October because messaging suggests they can afford to be patient, while adding that at least one more hike is expected at the December meeting.
Geopolitical developments also influenced sentiment, as media reports indicated that senior officials from Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan held talks with Iran on Monday to de-escalate the current crisis. Iran's security chief Mohsen Rezaei described the discussions as "very good" and said he sensed a positive atmosphere emerging in the region. Following these talks, oil prices pulled back from six-month highs; Brent crude futures traded at $114.71 per barrel, down nearly 1%, while WTI crude futures fell 0.85% to $100.89 per barrel.
Individual stock movements reflected the mixed signals from earnings and sector-specific news. SoFi Technologies shares rose about 0.17% overnight ahead of its third-quarter results expected Tuesday before the bell, with analysts forecasting earnings per share of $0.17 on revenue of $1.26 billion. BlackBerry Ltd. shares climbed after CEO John Giamatteo highlighted optimistic prospects in automotive software, robotics, and physical AI. Conversely, PayPal Holdings Inc. shares fell nearly 0.8% ahead of first-quarter earnings, where analysts expect an EPS of $1.31 on revenue of $8.71 billion. Celestica, Inc. surged nearly 17% overnight after posting strong third-quarter results that beat Wall Street expectations.
In fixed income markets, the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield traded at 4.978%, while the 30-year yield stood at 5.292%. The iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (TLT) was up 0.10%. Asian markets opened mixed on Tuesday, with South Korea's KOSPI and Japan’s Nikkei 225 trading higher, while China’s SSE Composite declined.
