US Space Force leaders aim to have a new spaceport operational within four years, adding a third heavy-lift launch site to alleviate pressure on existing bases in Florida and California. Those current locations have supported rocket launches into orbit for nearly 70 years. However, Pentagon officials have not yet determined the location of the new spaceport or how to acquire the necessary land. Air Force Secretary Troy Meink first disclosed the search for a third launch base in May. Speaking at a House Armed Services Committee hearing, Meink cited a congressionally mandated study of the Space Force's launch infrastructure. That study identified the need for another site capable of heavy and super heavy launch capability.
