Riley Exploration Permian shares have outperformed the S&P 500 by 25.5% over the past six months, with the stock trading at $48.32. This represents a 33.6% gain for the company, which drills for and produces oil and natural gas from horizontal wells in the Permian Basin of West Texas and New Mexico.

The recent rise in the share price follows solid quarterly results and has prompted a review of the company's long-term fundamentals. Operating in counties where legacy oil fields have produced since the early 1900s, Riley Exploration Permian has demonstrated consistent growth that distinguishes it from weaker operators in cyclical energy sectors.

Over the last five years, the company's sales grew at a 31.9% compounded annual growth rate. This pace of expansion exceeded the average for energy upstream and integrated energy companies. While energy gross margins can fluctuate yearly due to prices, hedging, and cost inflation, longer-term margins reveal structural advantages in rock quality, infrastructure access, and cost position.

Riley Exploration Permian averaged a 76.4% gross margin over the same five-year period. These unit economics position the company to remain profitable at lower commodity prices than peers with inferior margins. This advantage serves as a starting point for generating operating profits and free cash flow.

Free cash flow is considered a telling metric because it accounts for all operating and capital expenses, making it difficult to manipulate. The company's free cash flow margin averaged 16.1% over the last five years, a figure described as impressive for an upstream and integrated energy business. This cash profitability allows Riley Exploration Permian to reinvest in its operations or return capital to investors.

With these factors in mind, the stock currently trades at a 6.4× forward price-to-earnings ratio. The company's performance has been strong enough to rank highly on internal growth lists, which have previously included names such as Nvidia, Tecnoglass, Meta, CrowdStrike, and Broadcom.
