Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., described herself as a "working class" member of Congress who lives "paycheck to paycheck" during an interview with MS NOW on Wednesday night. The comments emerged as the Justice Department continues an investigation into her financial disclosures, a matter U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro confirmed during an appearance on Fox News' "America Reports."

Omar stated she drives a 2016 Toyota Camry and maintains a "basic life" with four children. Her characterization contrasts with her $174,000 annual congressional salary and prior scrutiny over asset valuations tied to her husband, Tim Mynett. According to House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., Omar's disclosures previously listed assets connected to Mynett as worth as much as $30 million in 2024, up from as much as $51,000 in 2023. Omar later amended the filing, attributing the original figures to an accounting error and listing the couple's assets at between $18,004 and $95,000.

The interview marked Omar's first public appearance since Homeland Security Investigations agents searched her Washington, D.C., residence on Oct. 12. The search was part of an investigation into possible immigration-related offenses. Omar acknowledged that the agents were "polite" and left the property in good condition, noting they even folded some of her clothing. She claimed the agents searched her home for four to five hours and removed 17 items, including notebooks and a children's Somali-language phrasebook.

Since the raid, Omar has used the investigation to fundraise, alleging the administration aims to intimidate voters before midterm elections. The Democratic National Committee sent a fundraising email describing the raid as a "drastic escalation" of a "partisan investigation." In a separate development, Comer told host Trey Gowdy on Fox News' "Sunday Night in America" that his committee's review identified multiple issues in Omar's disclosures that could justify further investigative steps. Comer pointed to a February letter sent to Mynett questioning how the value of their businesses increased so dramatically in one year.

Mynett owns eStCru, a winery, and Rose Lake Capital, an investment firm. Reports indicate the winery has ceased operations due to fraud allegations. Comer noted that Omar's 2023 disclosure listed her stake in eStCru as worth between $15,001 and $50,000, while the 2024 form listed a stake worth between $1,000,001 and $5,000,000. Omar has denied wrongdoing, and no criminal charges have been filed against her in connection with the disclosures. The financial investigation remains ongoing.
