Against the backdrop of a ratings moment that may have peaked, the NFL ran a coordinated influencer play at training camp this summer. Front Office Sports, citing a league source, reported that viral videos of quarterbacks and their partners were "partly coordinated," a disclosure that reframes weeks of social media activity as a deliberate audience strategy rather than organic content.

The commercial logic traces directly to 2023. Morning Consult Brand Intelligence data found that 64% of Gen Z and Millennial women surveyed held a favorable outlook on the NFL after Taylor Swift attended five Kansas City Chiefs games that December, an 11-point jump from the pre-Swift baseline in July. The Chiefs appeared in four of the five most-watched NFL games during the 2025 season. A Thanksgiving broadcast on CBS alone drew 57.3 million viewers.

The successor search

Travis Kelce, 36, is reportedly playing his final season, and the league's problem is structural: it built an audience segment on a relationship that is running out of playing time. The NFL's apparent answer centers on Madison Beer, the pop singer who got engaged to Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert in late July. Beer carries 39.5 million Instagram followers and 21.1 million TikTok followers and completed a 32-stop tour through the United Kingdom, Europe, and the United States this summer, including a sold-out show at Madison Square Garden in July. The Front Office Sports report also named Olivia Ponton, linked to Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow, and Marissa Ayers, linked to New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart, as participants in the campaign.

NFL executive Ian Trombetta described the training-camp videos to Front Office Sports as "authentic, genuine and relatable," saying the content had "resonated strongly with women and young fans, who are key growth audiences for the NFL." OutKick reported it had asked Trombetta to clarify that characterization and had not received a response.

The November test

The Chargers are booked into prime-time slots on ESPN on November 16 and on NBC on November 29, both falling inside the holiday shopping window. Fan reaction on social media has been negative: commenters called the approach "insulting to women" and "cringe," with one noting that the Swift and Kelce dynamic generated revenue precisely because it looked nothing like a league activation. The next visible data point is whether Beer's promotional calendar aligns with those two broadcast dates.
