Nasdaq 100 futures fell 0.8% to 30,646.50 points late Monday, leading losses among major U.S. stock contracts as investors reacted to a sharp decline in Asian semiconductor stocks. S&P 500 futures slipped 0.2% to 7,840.0 points, while Dow Jones futures edged up 0.2% to 52,187.0 points by 23:12 ET.
The premarket weakness followed a mixed Monday session where the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.4%, the S&P 500 dipped 0.1%, and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 0.5%. Technology shares, specifically chipmakers, faced pressure as traders reduced exposure to growth-oriented stocks ahead of upcoming corporate earnings and inflation reports.
The sell-off in chip stocks intensified in Asian trading Tuesday, where South Korea's KOSPI index slid more than 7%. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix each dropped over 8%. The declines followed reports that Chinese memory chipmaker ChangXin Memory Technologies had made progress on a next-generation DRAM design known as 4F², a technology that could increase memory density.
ChangXin Memory Technologies is also targeting the launch of server DDR5 memory products using this technology by the end of 2026. This development has intensified concerns over future competition and pricing pressure in the memory market. Most U.S. memory chipmakers traded lower in extended trading following the news.
Investors will turn their attention to the start of the U.S. banking sector's earnings season on Tuesday, with results due from JPMorgan Chase & Co, Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, and Wells Fargo. UnitedHealth Group and Johnson & Johnson are also scheduled to report results. Analysts expect bank earnings to be scrutinized for signs of resilience in lending, investment banking, and consumer credit, along with management commentary on economic growth.
A key focus will be whether strong corporate profits can justify elevated stock valuations, particularly after major indexes ended last week near record levels. Oil prices also remain a source of uncertainty for market participants. Brent crude edged lower on Tuesday after rising 2% to $106.65 a barrel on Monday following deadly strikes on Riyadh's international airport over the weekend.
The recent surge in oil prices threatens to reinforce inflation pressures, which could complicate the Federal Reserve's policy outlook. The September consumer price index report is scheduled for release on Wednesday, with producer price figures and retail sales data following on Thursday. These economic indicators could influence expectations for the Fed's next interest-rate decision, especially after recent weakness in the labor market raised hopes that policymakers might avoid further tightening.
