Oregon head coach Dan Lanning vowed to take "appropriate action" against wide receiver Evan Stewart following the player's arrest for driving under the influence, though Lanning stated he is still gathering details on the incident. The arrest occurred early Sunday, hours after the Ducks defeated Nebraska on Saturday night, an event Lanning described as casting a shadow over the team's win.
Stewart was booked into the Springfield Municipal Jail on DUI charges, according to police records. Lanning emphasized that the matter would be resolved within the program and declined to answer further questions on the topic, noting that the team would address it internally with the players.
The incident has complicated the narrative of a season in which Stewart has made a significant return. He missed all of last season due to a right patellar tendon tear. In the current campaign, he has recorded 27 catches for 352 yards and four touchdowns. Stewart did not play in the game against Nebraska because of an undisclosed injury.
"There was an incident this weekend that didn’t match our standard here in our program," Lanning said.
The Ducks face a separate personnel question ahead of their upcoming visit to Illinois in a Big Ten matchup. Quarterback Dante Moore, who has missed the past two games while recovering from a concussion, remains in doubt. Lanning noted that Moore participated in practice leading up to the Week 6 game against UCLA, but quarterbacks Brock Thoman and Dylan Raiola ultimately played in that 17-15 loss. Both Thoman and Raiola also saw action against Nebraska.
