Niccolo de Masi, chairman and chief executive of IonQ, stated on Wednesday that a 2,000-qubit quantum machine could break the elliptic-curve encryption securing Bitcoin in under 26 days. De Masi reiterated his expectation that "Q-Day," the point at which quantum computers threaten current public-key standards, will arrive in 2028, a timeline he described as sooner than previously anticipated.
During an appearance on CNBC, de Masi referenced a paper published by IonQ outlining the technical feasibility of an elliptic-curve encryption attack. He emphasized that while the capability is not yet realized, the timeline for cryptographically relevant machines is compressing rapidly. On IonQ's Q2 2026 earnings call, de Masi noted that the estimated number of qubits required to break encryption has dropped by four orders of magnitude over the past 15 years. He observed that market perception has shifted from expecting Q-Day in the 2030s to the 2020s.
Inder Singh, IonQ's chief financial officer, warned that financial services firms are recognizing the risk that RSA 2048 and ECC 256 encryption protocols may eventually be compromised. ECC 256 is the specific standard used to secure Bitcoin wallet signatures. De Masi acknowledged the commercial tension inherent in IonQ's position: the company is both publishing research on the threat and selling security solutions to mitigate it. IonQ recently launched a quantum key distribution product called ClavisXG Multiplex, designed to protect existing fiber networks. De Masi described quantum key distribution as a method that requires a violation of the laws of physics to hack.
The company is accelerating its hardware development to support these security products. De Masi said IonQ is on a path to 10,000 qubits in 2027. The company has received first fully integrated QPUs from SkyWater and plans to begin commissioning 256-qubit systems in 2027. Financial results for the second quarter showed revenue of $80.1 million, a 287% increase year over year. IonQ provided full-year 2026 guidance of $280 million to $290 million and reported remaining performance obligations of $485 million.
Despite the warnings regarding quantum threats, major holders of Bitcoin continued to increase their positions. Michael Saylor's Strategy resumed buying after a 10-week pause, disclosing a $370 million purchase of Bitcoin. At the time of de Masi's comments, Bitcoin traded near $79,530, up 22.96% over the prior month. IonQ shares last traded at $39.17, down 11.84% over the past month and 12.7% year to date.
