Against the backdrop of passive investing's long intellectual rise, the research and education work that built the sector's evidence base is drawing formal acknowledgment from established professional institutions. Mark J. Higgins, CFA, CFP, of Irvine, California-based Index Fund Advisors, has received honors from both the CFA Institute and the Museum of American Finance for his contributions to investment research and financial education, the firm announced July 7, 2026.
Two institutions, different mandates
The honors come from organizations with distinct roles in professional finance. The CFA Institute oversees global investment analysis standards and credentialing. The Museum of American Finance focuses on financial history and public education. Index Fund Advisors said Higgins earned recognition from both, citing his work in investment research and financial education. He holds both the Chartered Financial Analyst and Certified Financial Planner designations.
Sector read-through for passive investing
Index Fund Advisors is based in Irvine, California, and operates in the passive investment advisory space. Sector-wide, the advisory community that advocates for index-based strategies has worked to document the research record behind that case. Recognition from the CFA Institute and the Museum of American Finance, arriving in the same announcement, reflects how that educational work has registered outside the passive investing community.
The macro caveat is whether recognition from credentialing and historical bodies shifts how institutional and retail allocators engage with the underlying evidence. Professional acknowledgment carries weight within its own circles. On balance, earning recognition from both the CFA Institute and the Museum of American Finance marks a research profile that registers with organizations serving different constituencies within professional finance.
