Tesla's amended Form 10-K/A filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on May 1, 2026, valued CEO Elon Musk's annual total compensation for 2025 at $158.35 billion. The company noted that this figure is largely an accounting valuation of stock awards, meaning Musk did not receive the sum in cash or realized compensation.

If Musk were to convert this 2025 compensation into Bitcoin (BTC) on the day of the disclosure, the purchase would represent a significant portion of the cryptocurrency's total supply. At a price of approximately $76,300 on May 1, the $158.35 billion valuation could have acquired around 2.075 million BTC. With Bitcoin's maximum supply capped at 21 million coins, this hypothetical acquisition accounts for nearly 10% of the total supply.

Musk has previously acknowledged holding cryptocurrency assets. In 2021, he revealed at a panel discussion that he holds Bitcoin, along with Ethereum (ETH) and Dogecoin (DOGE). In a podcast appearance last year, he stated that he expects money as a concept to disappear in the future once advanced automation meets human needs at scale, suggesting an energy-based currency like Bitcoin could take over.

Tesla's corporate history with Bitcoin includes a purchase of 43,200 coins in February 2021. The company briefly experimented with accepting Bitcoin for vehicle purchases but abandoned the policy within weeks due to the environmental impact of mining. During the first quarter of 2021, Tesla sold 10% of its holdings, followed by the sale of around 75% of its remaining coins in the second quarter of 2022. A small purchase in January 2025 increased Tesla's holdings to 11,509 Bitcoin, and the company has not sold any coins since then.

Bitcoin was trading at $77,173 at the time of writing, according to Decibel.
