Daughter's memoir recounts years of warning signs before 'Black Swan' Florida killing

A Florida manslaughter conviction that drew national attention closed with a 20-year prison sentence for former ballerina Ashley Benefield in 2024. Now her stepdaughter, Eva Benefield, has written a first-person account of the years leading to the shooting, in a memoir titled "Ghost Girl: Surviving the Black Swan Murder," recounting how she grew to distrust her stepmother and why, when she learned her father had been shot, she says she knew immediately who had fired.

A marriage that moved fast

Doug Benefield, 54 at the time of the wedding, married Ashley Byers just 13 days after meeting her, within a year of the death of his first wife Renee Benefield. Eva was still in high school when her mother died of a heart condition. She told Fox News Digital she had an instinctive misgiving from the start: she believed the pair were dating casually, and learned only the day after meeting Ashley that her father was already married.

In the memoir, Eva describes a home that turned hostile after Ashley moved in. She alleges her stepmother read her private journal, worked to erase reminders of Renee from the house, and carried a firearm openly. In 2017, Ashley launched the American National Ballet, a Charleston-based dance company. Doug invested himself in the venture. When it collapsed later that year, Ashley moved back to Florida while pregnant with their daughter, Emerson.

The custody dispute and the shooting

The couple's estrangement became a custody battle over Emerson. In September 2020, Doug, then 58, was shot and killed at the Lakewood Ranch, Florida home where Ashley was staying with her mother. Ashley testified at trial that she fired in self-defense, saying she believed he would kill her after she ordered him to leave. Investigators found no visible signs of physical abuse on her after the shooting.

Prosecutors argued the allegations Ashley had made against Doug over the years, including multiple calls to police and a report to child protective services that Eva described to Fox News Digital, were part of a pattern designed to gain sole custody of Emerson. The jury, after nearly seven hours of deliberations, returned a manslaughter verdict rather than the second-degree murder charge filed by prosecutors.

What the memoir carries

Eva has documented her father's case publicly, including on TikTok. She describes him as gentle, patient, and endlessly curious. A Navy veteran with garage projects he shared with his daughter. More than a year before the shooting, Doug had been on the verge of leaving Florida for good. Eva persuaded him to stay one extra day so Emerson could celebrate Easter with him. He stayed. Looking back, she described it as the one time she saw him truly resolve to leave, and then not follow through.

At sentencing, Eva told the court what hurt her most was knowing her father had found Ashley "at such a vulnerable part of his life." Ashley Benefield is now serving a 20-year sentence.
