The Washington Commanders and New York Giants finished Sunday's contest in a 27-27 tie after both teams failed to secure a decisive score in overtime. The result marks the second tie between the two franchises in three seasons, ending a back-and-forth game that featured a late-game rally and critical errors in the final seconds.
Washington held a 14-point lead in the fourth quarter before Giants quarterback Jameis Winston led New York to force extra time. The Giants appeared poised to win with under two minutes remaining in overtime, but running back Cam Skattebo fumbled while attempting to run down the clock. Washington recovered the ball near midfield, requiring a drive into field-goal range to claim the victory.
Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels, who rushed for 103 yards in the game, led the final possession to the New York 24-yard line with 12 seconds left on the clock. Facing second-and-8 and without timeouts, Daniels scrambled for no gain. The team failed to spike the ball before time expired, forfeiting an opportunity to attempt a game-winning field goal.
Skattebo accepted responsibility for the turnover after the game. "At the end of the day I have to take care of the ball," Skattebo said. "I gotta hold on to the ball and make sure these guys know that when my name's called, we're gonna be okay."
Commanders head coach Dan Quinn attributed the final sequence to coaching decisions rather than player error. Quinn slammed his headset in frustration as time expired. "The sequencing of that does not fall on [Jayden]," Quinn said. "I haven't spoken to him but that one's on me. We don't need to put him in that space." Quinn described the outcome bluntly: "The tie feels like a loss."
Daniels also took ownership of the offensive failure. "We gotta relay that as a offense, it starts from everybody top down," Daniels said. "Ultimately, it's on me."
Commanders part-owner Magic Johnson criticized the team's clock management in overtime. "I'm in total disbelief my Commanders had such poor clock management in today's overtime game against the Giants," Johnson stated. "All we had to do was kick the field goal and we would have won the game!"
The result leaves every NFC East team without a win this week. The Dallas Cowboys lost Thursday, and the Philadelphia Eagles fell earlier Sunday. The Giants and Commanders were unable to capitalize on their rivals' defeats after 70 minutes of play, multiple missed field goals, and two costly mistakes in overtime.
