Coder Lorean Xavier has released an open source tool that builds a playable x86 PC executable of Hideo Kojima's cult classic P.T. from original PlayStation 4 files. The project addresses the game's long-standing restriction to the discontinued PlayStation 4 platform, where it was only available for a limited period as a "playable trailer" for the canceled Silent Hills project.
Xavier stated that the motivation for the work was to ensure the game continued to exist outside of consoles that still had it installed. The porting effort rebuilds the game engine in C++ and Vulkan. It uses the original PS4 assets to re-create every level, model, texture, sound, script, and cutscene. Because the tool relies on legitimate decrypted copies of the original game, players must obtain these files independently to generate the PC version.
This native port distinguishes itself from previous hobbyist recreations by using authentic game files rather than attempting to mimic the look and feel. Recent advances in PlayStation 4 emulation have allowed P.T. to run completely on other hardware. Yet Xavier's port includes additional features not found in emulated versions. These enhancements include upscaling, frame-generation, a camera mode, experimental third-person and VR support, and a "museum" section that allows users to examine and listen to in-game assets, including unused content.
