BMW is launching a dual-powertrain strategy for the upcoming 2027 X5, offering both a mild hybrid gasoline version and an all-electric iX5. The automaker is retaining its powertrain-agnostic CLAR platform to accommodate customers who are not yet ready to transition to electric vehicles, particularly in the United States. This approach allows BMW to offer mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid X5 models alongside the electric iX5, with a hydrogen-powered option planned for later release.
The new models utilize technology from BMW's first Neue Klasse model, the iX3, which introduced the automaker's sixth-generation electric powertrain. This system features a clean-sheet design, a reimagined dashboard, and high-performance computers to manage vehicle operations. Much of this infrastructure is being ported to the larger X5 line. The CLAR platform, which supports diverse models such as the 7 Series and the new gasoline 3 Series, remains the foundation for the new X5 lineup, ensuring flexibility in powertrain options.
The most conventional option in the lineup is the X5 40 xDrive, which is powered by a 3.0 L turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine. This powertrain generates 394 hp (294 kW) and 428 lb-ft (580 Nm) of torque. A 48 V mild hybrid system contributes an additional 148 lb-ft (200 Nm) of torque when necessary. The engine operates under the Miller cycle to improve efficiency and incorporates standard BMW technologies such as variable valve timing. The manufacturer expects this configuration to achieve approximately 26 mpg (9 L/100 km) with a full-to-empty range of 569 miles (915 km). BMW provided flights from Washington, DC, to Los Angeles and accommodation for media evaluation of the new X5, iX5, and a refreshed i7.
