Airline shares climbed on Tuesday, October 21, following United Airlines' announcement of record third-quarter revenue growth of 17% year over year to $17.9 billion. The sector move came as investors monitored fuel-cost trends and broader demand signals from major U.S. carriers.

American Airlines Group (AAL) closed at $12.24, up 1.03%, with trading volume reaching 76.3 million shares. This figure was nearly 17% above the company's three-month average of 65.1 million shares. The stock had previously fallen about 37% since its initial public offering in 2005.

United Airlines (UAL) closed at $101.67, gaining 3.99%. The carrier stated it offset rising fuel costs with higher ticket prices while customer demand remained resilient. Delta Air Lines (DAL) also contributed to the sector's upward movement, closing at $77.67, up 1.32%.

Broader market indices reflected the positive sentiment, with the S&P 500 (^GSPC) closing at 7,758, up 0.59%, and the Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC) finishing at 26,703, up 1.05%. United's performance follows strong quarterly results from Delta, which reported record revenue of $20.2 billion on October 9, representing a 21% year-over-year increase. Delta expects next quarter's sales to grow 20% year over year, providing a fresh perspective on fares, fuel, and capacity discipline for the airline group.

American Airlines will release its Q3 earnings report on October 22. In the second quarter, the company delivered sales of $16.7 billion, its highest total in history, marking growth of 16.3% year over year. Investors are currently comparing American's setup with the recent signals from Delta and United. Earlier this month, American launched cash-and-miles bookings, a loyalty-product tailwind that could support engagement and ancillary revenue over time.
