Noelle Acheson, former managing director of research at CoinDesk, stated that current headwinds for Bitcoin are indicative of monetary tightening, despite the asset's resilience against higher yields and a stronger dollar. Speaking on Bloomberg Crypto, Acheson argued that Bitcoin is one of the few truly hard assets and functions as a debasement hedge, a role she described as more critical now than in previous years.
Acheson noted that Bitcoin is highly sensitive to liquidity expectations. She observed that higher treasury yields, increased rate hike expectations, elevated oil prices, and a higher dollar index theoretically should push Bitcoin prices down. However, she suggested that investors are looking through current market stress to anticipate future liquidity injections by authorities to address economic tensions. She argued that such interventions would accelerate inflation and currency debasement relative to goods, benefiting hard assets like Bitcoin.
Regarding the impact of stablecoins on the broader crypto industry, Acheson affirmed that they improve sentiment and liquidity by providing easier on-ramps for on-chain payments compared to linking fiat accounts. She acknowledged, however, that exchange-traded funds and derivative products have already allowed investors to gain exposure to Bitcoin without direct on-chain purchases. She noted increased adoption of Bitcoin-related products in Europe, where she was speaking from, while maintaining that stablecoins offer a smoother settlement path for professional investors.
On the subject of Bitcoin market cycles, Acheson suggested that institutional involvement may dampen volatility, making future cycles less violent than past retail-driven spikes. She emphasized that bull runs are driven by new money entering an asset and that the pool of potential new capital for Bitcoin remains vast. Acheson expressed uncertainty about the exact nature of the next cycle but indicated her instinct is that it will be more muted than previous iterations, though still significant.
The current price levels for Bitcoin were attributed by Acheson to an August announcement by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent regarding the doubling of buybacks for long-term dated Treasuries. She reported that this move pushed Bitcoin up by $10,000 in two days. Acheson identified further signs of Treasury concern as the next potential catalyst for price momentum, suggesting that such actions would trigger additional upside.
