The global memory shortage has placed Washington and Silicon Valley on a collision course.

US lawmakers have urged the Trump administration to prohibit American companies from buying memory chips made in China, just as Apple has been lobbying for clearance to source from Chinese chipmaker CXMT.

The two positions point in opposite directions and cannot both be satisfied.
