The push to extend American military reach into the Arctic arrived at a new phase.
President Trump announced plans to establish what he called a large military presence in Greenland as part of a security arrangement with the island and Denmark, recasting what had been an explicit ambition to acquire Greenland outright.
The island's position on that ambition has not changed. Greenland has maintained, and maintained consistently, that it is not for sale. The security deal framing does not alter that stance.
The distinction between a negotiated military presence and outright acquisition carries real diplomatic and legal weight, but it does not eliminate the need for Greenland's agreement, and Greenland has not signalled that one is forthcoming.
