Nike's retail retreat and female consumer problem drag the brand toward S&P 100 exit

Athletic apparel has been cycling through a competitive reordering, with direct-to-consumer strategies adopted during the COVID era now under strain as shoppers returned to physical retail.

Against that backdrop, Nike is set to be removed from the S&P 100 following prolonged stock weakness, and a panel on OutKick host Dan Dakich's "Don't @ Me" show offered one of the sharper public assessments of how the brand arrived here.

Dakich was joined by Dan Zaksheske and Jason Hammer.

On the distribution side, Hammer drew on an insight he credited to FOX Business anchor Taylor Riggs: Nike cut its retail partners loose and pivoted to direct-to-consumer sales, but consumers coming out of the COVID period were eager to return to physical stores.
