MLB trade deadline tightens as wild-card math squeezes the seller pool

Against the backdrop of a rule change that reshaped competitive incentives across the league, Major League Baseball's August 3 deadline is arriving with an unusually thin market of willing sellers.

The 2022 expansion to three wild-card playoff spots has kept all but seven of the league's 30 teams within 5½ games of postseason contention, compressing the supply side of the deadline market to a degree rarely seen.

World Series champion Joe Girardi, speaking to Fox News Digital, says that constraint hands pricing power squarely to the small group of franchises prepared to move players.

Sellers set the terms Girardi, who won three championships as a player across a 15-year career and later managed the New York Yankees for 10 seasons to one title, put the numbers plainly: roughly seven teams would consider themselves eliminated, leaving approximately 23 still in the hunt.
