Against the backdrop of an entertainment industry still working through the economics of streaming distribution, the residual payment system underpinning legacy broadcast content has drawn fresh attention.
Jennifer Hyatt Tedmori, 37, who appeared on Nickelodeon's "Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide," shared video footage this week of opening accumulated residual checks, finding her total earnings from that show came to $8.63, with a further $30.06 from a guest appearance on "90210" made more than 20 years ago.
The numbers behind the checks Individual payments ranged from two cents to $1.11. Multiple checks came in at three cents.
Tedmori noted that a single envelope costs 75 cents to post, a figure that exceeded several of the payments inside. Her summary was blunt: the math was not working. The contrast with top-tier residual earners is stark.
