Britain's monarchy has long struggled to contain the commercial pull of former senior royals.
King Charles sharpened that tension on September 7, when the Lord Chamberlain issued a letter declaring Prince Harry and Meghan Markle "akin to private citizens," a move that prompted an immediate rebuttal from sources close to the couple.
Those sources, speaking to People magazine, argued that Harry and Markle are "public figures." Their logic: if the couple were truly private citizens, the Lord Chamberlain would not have needed to issue formal guidance at all.
"Members of the public know who they are. The idea that they can live a normal, 'private' life is sadly not realistic," a source told the magazine.
