The global push to reduce chemical and material waste from public celebrations has reached one of its most persistent sources of post-event refuse.
Against that backdrop, a research team in Japan has developed fireworks featuring water-soluble shells, a design intended to reduce the environmental debris that conventional pyrotechnic displays leave behind.
A design built around dissolution Traditional fireworks leave shell casings and chemical residue across the sites where they discharge, and the debris adds up across a full display.
The Japanese team's approach works at the material level: when the firework detonates and the casing falls, it dissolves rather than accumulating as physical waste.
