Tensions over mass tourism are building across Spain's Mediterranean coast, and in Ibiza they have moved from social media grievance to physical occupation.
Roughly 100 residents blocked access to Cala Saladeta, a popular beach on the island, in a demonstration organized by the Ibiza Youth Association against what the group called tourist overcrowding.
Ibiza, known locally as Eivissa, received nearly 1.2 million visitors in the second quarter of 2025 alone, according to data from the Balearic Islands Statistics Institute.
The occupation is the most visible local sign of an affordability squeeze that the tourism-dependent model has imposed on residents.
