A reading that diverges from forecasts by more than a full percentage point tends to carry weight beyond the single data line. The swing in direction matters as much as the absolute number.
Moving from a 0.9% rise in June to a 0.8% fall in July is a 1.7 percentage point reversal across two consecutive months. Forecasters had built in at least modest continuation of June's momentum.
Against the backdrop of the broader cross-border trade cycle, Germany's export data tends to surface shifts in goods demand before those shifts appear in other countries' figures.
