Equinor enters Namibia's Orange Basin with 17.4% stake in PEL 90

The Orange Basin off the coast of Namibia has been drawing intensifying cross-border attention following several major discoveries in the region, and that pull is now reaching Norway.

Equinor has agreed to acquire a 17.4% participating interest in petroleum exploration licence 90 (PEL 90) from Harmattan Energy, a subsidiary of Chevron, marking the company's entry into the Namibian upstream sector.

The deal, subject to regulatory approval and closing conditions, grants Equinor access to a drill-ready prospect in Block 2813B with testing planned for 2026.

The licence is operated by Chevron in water depths ranging from 2,300 to 3,300 metres. Before the transaction, Harmattan Energy held a 52.5% stake.
