Against the backdrop of shifting sovereign reserve strategies, De Nederlandsche Bank has repositioned its gold holdings away from vaults in the United States and Canada, moving the bars to custody at the Bank of England.
The Dutch central bank cited crisis preparedness as its reason for the transfer. The distinction DNB drew matters. Gold held at the Bank of England is, in the bank's own assessment, more readily tradable.
That translates directly into faster deployment in a severe crisis, which is the scenario a central bank's gold reserves are built to address.
Physical proximity to an active market is not incidental when the ability to settle quickly, rather than waiting on cross-border logistics, becomes a matter of institutional capacity.
