College football's playoff gate admits 12 from 68

With the college football regular season entering its first full week, starting Thursday evening, the sport's competitive structure reasserts itself as a point of contrast with the NFL.

Twelve teams reach the College Football Playoff from 68 programs across the Big Ten, SEC, ACC, Big 12 and Notre Dame, with one spot reserved automatically for a Group of 6 program.

That leaves 11 spots for the major conferences, a gate that passes just 16.1% of eligible programs to meaningful postseason play. Fourteen of 32 professional franchises make the league's postseason.

In the 2025 season, the 9-7-1 Green Bay Packers and the 8-9 Carolina Panthers both qualified. A loss in Week One of an NFL regular season carries limited terminal consequence.
