Coinbase chief executive Brian Armstrong publicly backed the CLARITY Act this week, arguing the legislation would prevent a repeat of the FTX collapse. Armstrong made his case on market-integrity grounds.

His position is that clear statutory rules could prevent the conditions that brought FTX down from recurring. That is a claim about structural gaps in the current regime, not a call for lighter oversight.

Against the backdrop of two boom-bust cycles, the mechanism is what matters here. FTX failed in part because the regulatory perimeter around custody and disclosure was either absent or contested across jurisdictions.
