Against the backdrop of a rapidly deteriorating cross-border media dispute, officials and senior security figures on both sides of the United States-Canada border delivered sharp criticism Monday.
The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation had reversed internal editorial guidance Friday, walking back a directive authored by Basem Boshra, CBC News' senior director of journalistic standards and public trust, which had instructed journalists not to describe the September 11 attacks as terrorism without attribution.
For several officials in Washington and Ottawa, the reversal arrived too late and under too much duress to settle the matter.
CBC's head of public affairs, Chuck Thompson, directed Monday inquiries to a revised Editor's Blog in which Boshra explained the change.
