Bitcoin and ethereum slip as Fed rate hike odds climb to 66.4%

Bitcoin and ethereum prices retreated on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, as mounting expectations for a Federal Reserve rate increase weighed on the digital assets.

Bitcoin opened at $78,559.11, up 1.1% from Monday's opening price, but fell to $77,945.97 by 8:19 a.m. Ethereum opened at $2,467.13, a 2% gain over Monday, before edging down to $2,454.23 in the same timeframe.

The CME Group's FedWatch tool currently shows a 66.4% probability that the Fed will raise rates by 25 basis points later this month, with a 33.6% chance of rates remaining unchanged.

This shift in market expectation is a notable reversal from the previous week, when economists estimated a 60.4% likelihood of no change and a 39.6% chance of a hike.
