The debate over who should monitor the world's most powerful AI systems has found a pointed institutional voice.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has proposed, in a recent open letter, that frontier AI companies accept teams of "embedded evaluators" with employee-like access to verify safety practices and assess training pipelines.
The organization he named as a working model, METR, an AI safety testing laboratory, is woven into the same effective altruism community whose capital helped build Anthropic from its earliest rounds.
The watchdog Amodei named METR describes itself as evaluating frontier AI models so that companies and the public can understand capabilities and risks.
